Design: Decoded Speaker Series campaign
Design: decoded is a hypothetical speaker series presented by the Design Exchange Museum and organized by The Young Designers Collective, aiming to break the stereotypes of design to inform and educate new emerging designers on the importance of the equal relationship between analog and digital elements of design in a technological age, and to acquire the skills of both. I created a campaign series featuring a poster, flyers, brochure, promotional video, and merchandise advertising the event.
Design tools:
Adobe InDesign
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe After Effects
Design Process
Step one: Project brief, Research, and mind mapping
We were assigned to research the future of design, and look into predictions from other designers given during interviews conducted by Adobe for 99u. Four predictions were then to be chosen and used to form a thesis that would then inform and produce a body of design work, containing both print and video. Based off of my chosen predictions and research the thesis I formed is as stated: "With the injection of technology into design, design has become more accessible, but technological and analog design are both still equally important". With this thesis is mind I decided to create a speaker series in which the theme would be informing emerging designers about how to use aspects of both analog and digital design, with the speakers being that of the 4 chosen predictions.
Step two: Creating the visuals
The ideas behind the visuals came directly from the thesis brainstorming. With the focus on the equal importance of analog and digital design, I felt that the visuals should be a juxtaposition of elements of each media together. Textures of scanned print design peeking through "holes", digital type layered as texture in an homage to David Carson, and analog graffiti. In the end I chose the symbol of the "X" as I felt like it symbolized breaking down stereotypes we often hear about the future of design, such as "print will be dead". Inside the brochure contained the schedule of events, and information on the speakers. I chose to create an origami brochure that can be folded up into a small square for convenience, so attendees don't have to have full hands.
